Five more years have passed in a blink.

Little Lisa has become a teenager, a thirteen-year-old witch, her unruliness increasing with each year. Her petite frame is broadening, and her once adorable features—the black, curly hair, button nose, and freckles—have grown unkempt, acne-riddled, and less becoming. A chasm has developed between Paul and me, compliments of Lisa. Her proximity to us breeds contempt for each other. Nowadays, he speaks to me only when he must, blaming the rough edges of our relationship on my “erratic behavior.” If only he knew the error of that statement. He has not seen me completely erratic yet. If he had, he would be more circumspect with his words to me.

I do not have time to make amends with a husband who drowns his perceived sorrows in a bottle. I wish to maintain a life endued with power and control, and I will not succumb to being a victim of circumstance, as I was in my weak youth. I need to spend my time listening to my inner guide, the voice that prompts me to action and empowers me to actualize the future I crave. My token husband and petulant daughter are merely obstacles to be overcome. I love them more than life itself, but if they stand in the way of the life I want, no amount of love will keep my wrath at bay.

Perhaps it is time for me to stop taking the sleeping pills and see what happens. Suppressing the sleepwalking is preventing me from living with a sense of power. For many years now, I have drugged myself into being docile. I am weary of being a muzzled dog. I want to run, I want to sniff and explore, I want to bite. I am curious as to what I could do and what I could be if the boundaries were removed. Maybe I should view it as an experiment. Surely, I can control myself now. It’s been six years since the last incident. I need to show my strength, and I can only do that by lifting the night fog of my medicated stupor. It’s time to set myself free.

Soon they will see that although I am a domesticated woman, I am far from tame.
